The Laws.
Five observations, treated operationally as constants.
- Law §01
All systems optimize for scale.
Whatever the system claims to optimize for, eventually it optimizes for itself. The chosen metric becomes the religion. The religion becomes the product.
- Law §02
All systems remove what they can’t measure.
If it does not fit on a dashboard, the system experiences it as noise. The system is not lying. It simply cannot see.
- Law §03
Meaning is not a metric.
Engagement, retention, throughput, NPS — these are shadows on a wall. The wall is real. The fire is real. The shadows are not what cast them.
- Law §04
Recursive mediocrity scales.
Each pass of summarization removes context. Each pass of optimization removes nuance. At sufficient iterations, all output converges on the same shape.
- Law §05
Someone has to keep receipts.
A record is not a complaint. A record is what allows the future to know what it was inheriting. We keep them. You may also keep them.
